Finnish Information Centre for Register Research ReTki

Aims

The Finnish Information Centre for Register Research (ReTki) aims to promote the use of national registers for research purposes, particularly in social and health sciences.

Basic functions

  • To offer information on registers and the use of registers in research
  • To organise training on register-based research
  • To give practical advice on using register data in research
  • To maintain a network of contact persons of participating register authorities and research institutes

Establishment and funding

ReTki was established within STAKES in 2003. Start-up funding was granted by the Academy of Finland. Since early 2006, the Centre's basic activities have been funded by the Social Insurance Institution, the National Public Health Institute, STAKES and the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. The National Public Health Institute and STAKES joined to become the National Institution for Health and Welfare (THL) in January 2009.

Current issues

Register-based dissertations

A disseration on Type 1 and type 2 diabetes among young adults in Finland : Incidence and perinatal exposures has been presented at the University of Helsinki by Niina Lammi on November 14th, 2009.

A dissertation using the Cancer register in Finland has been presented in Helsinki on November 7th, 2008: Johanna Seppänen "Mammographic mass-screening and future breast cancer burden in Finland"

A dissertation on the utilization of administrative registers in the context of health system performance evaluation has been published: Reijo Sund "Methodological Perspectives for Register-Based Health System Performance Assessment - Developing a Hip Fracture Monitoring System in Finland"
